Drug-Free Kids Launches Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Programming with Global Nonprofit
5th Grade FCD Portsmouth Parent Workshop
Kicks off Local Prevention and Awareness with 5th Grade Parents’ Workshop
Portsmouth, NH – Drug Free Kids is proud to announce the launch of its youth substance abuse prevention programming with a workshop for 5th grade parents led by global nonprofit FCD Prevention Works.
Drug Free Kids, an initiative of the Little Harbor Charitable Foundation, has teamed up with FDC Prevention Works to begin substance abuse prevention efforts in the Portsmouth School District. The first community workshop will be held Thursday, Feb. 2 from 6:30-7:30pm at Portsmouth Middle School, and is open to 5th grade parents and any interested community members.
Led by a substance abuse prevention specialist from FDC Prevention Works, this informative workshop will educate parents about the important role they play in drug prevention, the mental and physical effects of drug use and addiction on youth, and common myths and misconceptions around adolescent drug use.
“National research suggests that parents who discuss the risks of substances with their children can reduce problems with alcohol and other drugs by half,” said a representative for FCD Prevention Works. “It is important for parents to have ongoing, open discussions with their children. These workshops aim to assist parents with these conversations.”
To make it as easy as possible for parents to attend, the event will also include a separate and supervised event for children with comedic magician B.J. Hickman, a family-favorite around New England.
In its pilot year, Drug Free Kids will work with 5th and 6th grade students in Portsmouth schools while hosting various community workshops and events for parents and the greater seacoast community.
