LHCF Funds Shipwreck! Exhibit Rebuild at Seacoast Science Center
New Castle, NH April 19, 2010– Little Harbor Charitable Foundation (LHCF), credited with funding more than 50 projects and programs benefitting seacoast children announced the newest addition to the list with the rebuild of the Shipwreck ! Lizzie Car exhibit at the Seacoast Science Center (Rye, NH).
The Shipwreck! exhibit originally installed at the Center in 2002 featured a large hull section of the Maine built schooner Lizzie Car, which wrecked off Wallis Sands Beach in Rye in 1905. Thought to be the last coastal shipwreck, all but one member of the crew was rescued by the Wallis Sands Life Saving Service surfmen.
Dan DenDanto, owner of Whales and Nails, reconfigured the hull fragment for the proper reorienting of the schooner. Mr. DenDanto also led the team of experts that articulated the neighboring whale skeleton in the LHCF funded exhibition Tofu: the Journey of a Humpback Whale.
According to Paul Holloway LHCF chair the redesign and rebuild was important in staging the reinterpretation of the exhibit. Mr. Holloway said, “This wreck’s dramatic rescue story illustrated alongside this historic ship’s hull fragment is a fascinating and important piece of Seacoast history. “
Little Harbor Charitable Foundation, Seacoast Science Center, Wentworth Marina along with lead Tournament sponsor, Mercedes-Benz began their collaboration in supporting marine environmental education in 2006 to educate and motivate children to become responsible stewards of the Gulf of Maine.
LHCF’s 2008 and 2009 Striped Bass Tournament for Kids funded the Seacoast Science Center’s largest exhibition, Tofu: The Journey of a Humpback Whale. Unveiled June 18th 2009, the 32 foot hanging skeleton of Tofu a 2 ½ year old female 10-ton humpback whale struck and killed off the coast is the only whale skeleton on public display in the region. The study of Tofu aids young visitors understand big environmental concepts and aid in understanding the complex challenges facing the marine ecosystem.
In 2006 LHCF’s $250,000 grant funded Geo Adventurer: Assignment Gulf of Maine the first interactive multimedia program on the Gulf of Maine for the Gregg Interactive Learning Studio at the Seacoast Science Center. Since previewing in October of 2007 the Geo Adventurer’s interactive educational experience has helped participants gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the impact their choices and actions have upon the Gulf’s resources and inhabitants. Choices that ultimately affect the survival of the Gulf’s many species, like Tofu.
